D’Arcy’s passion for English-made wines comes from his early career running a pub group in the South East. After his son was born, he decided that it was time for a career change and began his studies at Plumpton College. He began his viticultural career at Nyetimber vineyards, helping to establish large areas of planting in West Sussex. D’Arcy Gander then formed Vineyard Care which established vineyards in Sussex and Surrey. He joined James in 2010 to form Vine-Works Ltd.

D’Arcy’s previous life saw him running a pub group in the South East, and it was here that his passion for English wine began: “I loved seeing the positive reaction of my customers to English wines, and this stuck with me. When my son was born, and I was looking for a change of career, studying Viticulture at Plumpton College was a great opportunity to become involved in the industry”.

D’Arcy enjoys the challenge of producing a crop every year and contending with the constantly-changing factors of weather, budgets and winemaker requirements. He’s also keenly interested in the effects of soil types on vine health and fruit production, and on how to improve soil condition.
“My focus within Vine-Works is ongoing vineyard management, staff recruitment and welfare. I enjoy the challenges this brings!”
